Culturally responsive and cognitively demanding informal mathematics tasks

June 30 to July 2, 2024

at the

American Institute of Mathematics, Pasadena, California

organized by

Alessandra Pantano and Cynthia Sanchez Tapia

This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will bring together participants with backgrounds in mathematics, mathematics education, informal STEM learning, and K-12 teaching/teacher preparation who share a commitment to welcoming multicultural learners in informal mathematics learning spaces.

The goals of this workshop include:

  1. Creating a framework for designing culturally responsive, cognitively demanding, informal mathematical investigations.
  2. Generating exemplars of high quality, culturally responsive mathematics activities for out-of-school programs that engage culturally diverse learners and their teachers.
  3. Building a long-term partnership between formal and informal sectors of the mathematics education ecosystem, centered around a shared commitment to equitable and culturally responsive mathematics instruction.
Among other activities, participants will collaboratively develop mathematical tasks that:
  • have a low floor and a high ceiling,
  • leverage and strengthen youth’s cultural knowledge, provide opportunities for responsive relationship-building,
  • connect youth with issues they care about, and
  • are joyful, engaging, and collaborative.

This event will be run as an AIM-style workshop. Participants will be invited to suggest topics of interest before the workshop begins, and these will be posted on the workshop website. The schedule will include discussion and parallel working sessions.

Space and funding is available for a few more participants. If you would like to participate, please apply by filling out the on-line form no later than May 1, 2024. Applications are open to all, and we especially encourage women, underrepresented minorities, junior mathematicians, and researchers from primarily undergraduate institutions to apply.
