The subject of functional analysis was pioneered by Stefan Banach in the 1920s and
1930s. It grew originally out of questions in Fourier analysis. Today it
is one of the most powerful techniques in mathematical analysis. The basic
idea is that, instead of studying just one function, one studies an entire space
of functions.
