Workshops: How to Run a Math Teachers’ Circle

Workshop: How to Run a Math Camp
October, 2012. Applications are currently being accepted for a workshop on "How to Run a Math Camp," to be held at the American Institute of Mathematics, Palo Alto, CA, March 6-8, 2013. This workshop, sponsored by AIM, the AMS, and the NSF, will bring together directors, organizers, and prospective organizers of summer programs or math camps in the United States. The main goals are to provide advice and support for individuals who have recently started or are interested in starting a math camp, as well as to provide experienced directors of math camps an opportunity to share their experiences and knowledge with each other and with new directors.
Judith Covington Receives Distinguished Teaching Award
March, 2012. Congratulations to Dr. Judith Covington, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Louisiana State University Shreveport and director of the North Louisiana Math Teachers’ Circle, who has been awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award of the Louisiana-Mississippi Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Dr. Covington was also recently recognized with the "Champions for Mathematics Education" award from the Northwest Louisiana Mathematics Association. Math Teachers’ Circle Featured on the Golf Channel

JMM 2012 Poster/Activity Session Call for Papers
September, 2011. The SIGMAA on Circles of the MAA is accepting proposals for a special poster and activity session to be held during the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Boston, January 4-7, 2012. Presenters from approximately 10 Circles around the country will be chosen to demonstrate sample Circle activities. The submission deadline is October 4, 2011. Please see the flyer for details.
August, 2011. The National Science Foundation has awarded the American Institute of Mathematics a grant of $449,981 to study the impact of Math Teachers’ Circles on middle school mathematics teachers. The three-year project will include research on participating teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching and classroom practice. Researchers will also collect information about the activities and best practices of Math Teachers’ Circles across the country. The project will be carried out by co-investigators Michael Nakamaye (University of New Mexico), Diana White (University of Colorado Denver), and Kristin Umland (University of New Mexico) in conjunction with AIM Executive Director Brian Conrey and Director of Special Projects Brianna Donaldson.
The project is funded through the NSF's highly competitive Discovery Research K-12 program. It was among approximately 30 projects selected for funding from over 500 proposals. According to Conrey, "This is an incredible opportunity to learn more about Math Teachers’ Circles and how they affect teachers' mathematical lives."
Colorado Math Circles Profiled in University of Colorado System Newsletter
August, 2011. The Rocky Mountain MTC, the Pikes Peak MTC, and the Colorado Math Circle for students were featured in the most recent issue of CU Connections, the University of Colorado system newsletter. The article offers an in-depth look at the immersion workshops offered by the Rocky Mountain and Pikes Peak MTCs this summer.
Mad Vet Problem Featured on NYTimes.com Blog
Summer, 2011. Gary Antonick’s Numberplay blog on NYTimes.com has recently featured some favorite Math Teachers’ Circle problems, with discussions led by Joshua Zucker on a Mad Veterinarian scenario and on Simpson’s Paradox. Both posts link to the Math Teachers’ Circle Network.
North Louisiana MTC Funded by the Foundation for the Mid South
June, 2011. The Louisiana State University in Shreveport Foundation, Inc. received a $25,000 grant from the Foundation for the Mid South to fund the North Louisiana Math Teachers’ Circle, created through the efforts of Dr. Judith Covington, associate professor of mathematics at LSU Shreveport, and a team of other teachers and LSUS faculty. The funds will allow the NLMTC to host a four-day summer workshop for 30 middle school teachers as well as conduct six follow-up meetings during the 2011-2012 academic year.
Correction: The MTC of North Dakota Summer Academy was omitted from the newsletter calendar as originally released. The Academy will take place June 13-24, 2011, at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.
Rocky Mountain Math Teachers’ Circle Leader Meets Obama on Field Trip

Middle school math teacher Ms. Linda Goertz, one of the leaders of the Rocky Mountain Math Teachers’ Circle, was helping chaperone her school's spring break trip to Washington, D.C., when the group received a surprise visit from President Obama. New York Math Circle and Bard Math Circle Make the News
December, 2010, and April, 2011. NY1 featured a story and video on the New York Math Circle, a group for middle and high school students that meets on Saturday mornings for mathematical problem solving. Dr. Japheth Wood, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Bard College and leader of the New York Math Circle’s programs for teachers, is interviewed for this NY1 story as well as for a more recent article from the Kingston Times about the Bard Math Circle, a similar group.

North Louisiana MTC Launched

Tellabs Foundation Supports AIM MTC Immersion Workshop
June 30, 2010. The American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) was recently awarded a grant of $13,900 from the Tellabs Foundation. The grant will help support an immersion workshop for middle school math teachers from Silicon Valley. The teachers will join the AIM Math Teachers’ Circle, which connects these teachers with local mathematicians to work on mathematical problem solving. Read more...
MTC Session Inspires Mathematical Research
June, 2010. Dr. Gene Abrams, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and leader of the Pikes Peak Math Teachers’ Circle, has recently published an article with co-author Dr. Jessica K. Sklar, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Pacific Lutheran University, that was inspired by a Math Teachers’ Circle session on Mad Veterinarian scenarios. Their article, which appears in the June 2010 edition of Mathematics Magazine, is entitled “The Graph Menagerie: Abstract Algebra and the Mad Veterinarian.” Slides from a talk on the research given by Dr. Abrams are available here.
