Workshop How to run a Math Teachers' Circle

This workshop will equip teams from various geographical regions with everything they need to organize and operate a successful Math Teachers' Circle. Participation is entirely free of charge, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors.

Schedule

The workshop will be held twice in 2008. The first session will be at the American Institute of Mathematics in Palo Alto, CA during the week of June 17-21 (schedule), and the second will be held at MAA's Carriage House Conference Center, Washington, DC, during the week of July 21-25 (tentative schedule). The application window for the 2008 session has closed. However, if you would like to apply for the 2009 session, please check back in mid-October.

Workshop

Every aspect of organizing and running a Math Teachers' Circle will be covered: fund-raising, finding a venue, recruiting teachers to attend, selecting appropriate mathematical content and leading problem-solving sessions. A small Math Teachers' Circle will run in parallel with the sessions above, so attendees can observe and practice leading problem-solving sessions.

Who Should Attend?

A team is required to organize a new Math Teachers' Circle. In addition to finding mathematicians to lead the sessions there are administrative challenges: funding, a venue, and recruiting teachers. This workshop will be for teams of people who can work together to start a Math Teachers' Circle. A team should consist of about five people, including a mathematician, an administrator, a recruiter, two school teachers and if possible, a representative of a local business community, who need only attend for a day or two. In particular, there will be a round table discussion with business leaders. Sometimes one person can cover more than one of these positions. The teachers who attend will not only participate in a Math Teachers' Circle, but can provide feedback on the effectiveness of techniques, and can help with recruiting when they return home.
