Finding and Keeping Graduate Students
in the Mathematical Sciences, III

July 9 to July 12, 2011

at the

American Institute of Mathematics, Palo Alto, California

organized by

Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Kathryn Chaloner, Loek Helminck, and Phil Kutzko

This workshop is sponsored by AIM, the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences, and the NSF. The workshop will provide an opportunity for graduate programs in the mathematical sciences to learn about successful initiatives to broaden participation in graduate study in the mathematical sciences as well as to draw up concrete plans to adapt and implement such initiatives in their home departments. These plans will improve outcomes for graduate students in terms of recruitment, retention, graduation, career development, and placement, with a focus on broadening access and enhancing success for U.S. students, particularly women and members of underrepresented groups. In addition, participation in this workshop will be an important criterion for those departments that wish to form Alliance Graduate Program Groups.

The workshop will involve about 24 participants and 8 presenters and facilitators. Participants will apply in teams from the same educational institution. Each team will preferably have at least three members and must include at least two representatives from a mathematical sciences department and at least one departmental or campus-level administrator.

The deadline to apply for this workshop has passed.
